A day after the CJHL preseason rankings were released with the Thunderbirds ranked No. 5, the defending top team in the nation began their first exhibition match up in Elliot Lake to take on the newly named Wildcats at Centennial Arena. After trailing 1-0 after the first period curtsey of a Nathan Campbell power play goal, Soo Thunderbirds Midgets forward Jacob Porco tied things up just 2:18 into the second with assists going to Alex Morin and Matt Caruso. Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League and Soo

Eagles of the North American Hockey League will resume the Rollie King Cup series after a two-year hiatus, officials from both teams have confirmed.

The cross-border Soo teams established the Rollie King Cup during the 2011-2012 season when both were members of the NOJHL. Read More

With limited roster spots open, the Soo Thunderbirds tryout camp wrapped up on Saturday afternoon at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The team came out of camp with two more players added to their 2014-15 roster, a forward and a defence man.

The team has inked 17-year-old defenceman Caleb Boman and 16-year-old forward Travis Campbell. Read More

As their main tryout camp approaches, the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds have three more players committed for the 2014-15 season.

The team has received commitments from a trio of local players in forward Matt Caruso and goaltender Mario Culina, both of whom played for the Waterloo Wolves major midget team in the 2013-14 season.

Caruso, whose brother Michael is a defenceman with the North American League’s Soo Eagles, finished last season with 18 goals and 46 points in 32 games before adding two goals and 10 points in 11 playoff games.

Caruso led the Wolves in goals, assists and points this season. Read More

After two years away, Jamie Henderson is back with the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds.

The former assistant coach with the team who was suspended for off-ice incidents during the Thunderbirds run to a Dudley Hewitt Cup title during the 2011-12 season has been brought on by the team as their assistant general manager. Read More
