T-Birds magic number now 1 with win over Beavers

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – Brendon Gordon turned aside all 19 shots he faced to backstop the Soo Thunderbirds to a 5-0 victory over the Blind River Beavers Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Blind River Community Centre.

With the win, the Thunderbirds have lowered their magic number to clinch first place overall in the NOJHL regular season standings to 1.

One more point gained by Sault Ste. Marie or lost by both the Cochrane Crunch and the Powassan Voodoos will give the club the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming league playoffs.

The Soo started things offensively 9:29 into the contest as Matthew Caruso collected his 24th of the campaign.

Ryan Mulligan added to the visitors cushion 58 seconds later as they took a 2-0 lead after one period of play.

The Thunderbirds tacked on two more in the middle stanza to go up by four as Matthew Busby converted on a man advantage opportunity while Zach Senecal had an even strength marker.

Matt Pinder’s 19th of the season 27 seconds into the final stanza rounded out the night’s scoring.

Jaren Bellini and Drake Pilon dished out two assists apiece for the T-Birds.

The shutout was the second of the season for Gordon.

Matt Blattenberger was peppered with 50 shots in defeat for Blind River.
