NOJHL announces Gongshow Gear players of the month for February

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday its respective Gongshow Gear Inc., player, defenceman, goaltender and rookie of the month for February.

GONGSHOW GEAR PLAYER OF THE MONTH – LOGAN FREDERICKS, (F) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS: In nine outings for Kirkland Lake in February the 20-year-old Millstone Township, N.J., native piled up 25 points on 15 goals and 10 assists.

Fredericks tallied at least once in seven of those contests and had points in eight of nine, including seven multi-point affairs.

He currently sits seventh in overall NOJHL offensive production with 74 points while his 45 goals are the second most in the league.

GONGSHOW GEAR DEFENCEMAN OF THE MONTH – MATTHEW BUSBY, SOO THUNDERBIRDS: A strong showing on both ends of the ice allowed the 19-year-old Shanty Bay, Ont., product to help the Thunderbirds close in on another NOJHL regular season crown.

Busby laced them up nine times last month and had points in all of them helping the league-leading T-Birds go 6-1.

In the time frame the Soo blueliner scored three times and set-up eight others for 11 points.

He was also solid defensively helping his team allow only 11 goals against.

Busby is presently riding a nine-game point streak for the Thunderbirds and sits second in scoring among club D-men with 38 points this season, which includes a dozen tallies.

GONGSHOW GEAR GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH – AARON MACKAY, ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS: The 18-year-old rookie netminder was unbeaten in regulation in February going 4-0-1 for the Wildcats.

Mackay, who hails from Millerville, Alta., also saved all eight attempts he faced in a relief stint in which the Wildcats also won.

For the month he posted a 2.06 goals-against average along with a solid .937 save percentage.

Mackay’s 18 wins this season are the fourth most among all league stoppers and he sits third in average and save percentage at 2.34 and .920 respectively. His two shutouts also has him tied for third in the league.

GONGSHOW GEAR ROOKIE OF THE MONTH – CALEB RICH, (F) FRENCH RIVER RAPIDS: As one of the youngest players in the entire NOJHL, the 16-year-old from Callander, Ont., averaged well over a point-per-game for the first-year Rapids last month.

In 10 contests, Rich scored four times and doled out 12 assists for 16 points.

Sitting fifth in NOJHL rookie scoring, Rich currently paces French River offensively with 43 points in 49 contests on 14 markers and 29 helpers.
