With 10 games to go in the regular season, the Thunderbirds have an eight-point lead on the second-place Soo Eagles and a 10-point cushion on the third-seeded Sudbury Cubs.

Over the past four years, Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League have produced two players for the Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association ranks.

Hulking winger Brett Perlini is now a senior with the Michigan State Spartans and is a National Hockey League draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks. Perlini played two seasons with the NOJHL Thunderbirds before opting for Michigan State rather than sign with the Ontario Hockey League's Soo Greyhounds.

John Kleinhans is putting the finishing touches on what has been a very good, three-year career in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

The 20-year old puckstopper from Sterling Heights, Mich. is, arguably, the best goalie in the NOJHL at the moment.

A strong first period helped the Soo Thunderbirds to a 5-4 victory over the North Bay Trappers on Wednesday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

The Thunderbirds built a 4-1 lead over the Trappers through 20 minutes and held off a third period charge by the Trappers that saw them pull to within a goal, only to come up short.
