The Penticton Vees, who eliminated the Soo Thunderbirds in Saturday's semifinals, are this year's champions of the Royal Bank Cup.

The Vees established themselves as Canada's best Junior A hockey team Sunday, by beating the Woodstock Slammers 4-3 in the tournament final in Humboldt, Sask.

The T-Birds split a pair of weekend games —including a dramatic and hard-fought 4-3 loss in double overtime to the Portage Terriers on Sunday — at the Royal Bank Cup, the Canadian Junior A championships, in Humboldt, Sask.

With an off day today, Kovacs, the club's interim coach, will take his charges on a 100-kilometre trip to Saskatoon.

HUMBOLDT, SASK. – The Soo Thunderbirds picked up right where they left off in the RBC Cup opener on Saturday.

The Thunderbirds opened the national championship with a 2-1 victory over the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League, deemed the tournament favourite by many heading into the tournament.

Thunderbirds defenceman James Delayer scored the winner with 8:34 remaining in the third and just 10 seconds after Penticton’s Wade Murphy had taken a charging penalty, giving the Thunderbirds their fourth power play of the evening.
