It wasn’t the typical high scoring affair between the two clubs but the result was most important for the Soo Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds picked up a 2-1 shootout victory on Saturday night over the visiting Sudbury Cubs.

“We only had fifteen guys in the lineup and I thought that everyone that played battled,” said Thunderbirds coach Preston Mizzi. “We did a really good job in our own zone. We kept Sudbury limited to the one power play goal. We know their power play’s dangerous and we did a good job of staying out of the penalty box.”

The Thunderbirds played the game without the services of Greg Satoretto, Dylan Connolly and Jake Wright due to injury while Micky Sartoretto was away from the team for personal reasons.

Brett Campbell opened the scoring for the Thunderbirds in the second period when he scored on a rebound after a point shot from James Delayer found its way through heavy traffic in front of the Sudbury goal.

The Cubs tied the game up in the third period when Jordan Carroll’s initial point shot was deflected in the slot by Jason Lacroix.

Thunderbirds blueliner Brad Pascall and forward Kevin Michelcavage proceeded to score in the shootout, which still featured some dramatics. Looking to keep the Cubs alive in the shootout, Carroll proceeded to hit the post behind Thunderbirds goaltender John Kleinhans, sealing the Thunderbirds victory.

Cubs coach Rod McKenzie was pleased with the effort of the Cubs despite the loss.

“We got into a bit of penalty trouble in the second period, which put us behind the eight-ball,” said McKenzie. “We were short-staffed as well but overall I’m ok with (the game).”

For the Thunderbirds, they return to the ice on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Blind River to take on the Beavers in a 2 p.m. start.
