Thunderbirds home to Blind River on Friday. It's back to the ice of John Rhodes Community Centre on Friday night when the Soo Thunderbirds play the Blind River Beavers in a Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League exhibition game. Start time is 8 p.m.
The new-look Thunderbirds have been revamped from a 2009-10 season that saw them finish atop the West Division of the NOJHL and go all the way to the championship series before losing to the Abitibi Eskimos in a thrilling seven-game set.
Many Thunderbirds have moved on, either by graduation or relocation, but new general manager Kevin Cain has re-stocked the team via trades and signings from the local ranks. Newcomers acquired through trades with other Jr. A teams include several local products: goalie Michael Doan, defenceman Corey Jackson and forwards David McCaig and Cody Zorzi.
The Birds have also added a number of high-end local players from the AAA midget, AA midget and high school ranks. Returnees from last season include right winger Jerry Petingalo, who will be the Thunderbirds captain for the '10-11 season.
